A very complicated system.

The first half of the league is named Apertura where every team is involved in 19 matches. The Apertura Champions will play to the next season's Coppa Libertadores.

The second half of the league is named Clausura where every team is involved in also 19 matches. The Claususura Champions will play to the next season's Coppa Libertadores.

In Coppa Mercosur (Sudamericana) will participate the 4th, 5th & 6th placed teams. Additionally 2 teams will also participate by decision from the National Association.

For the relegation decision it must be calculated the average points of every team in last 3 years. The 19th & 20th will be relegated to the 2nd Division. The 17th & 18th will be involved in play-off matches with the 3rd & 4rth of the 2nd Division, respectively.
